A Welcome Break from the Deep Freeze
After weeks of biting cold and seemingly relentless wind, we’re finally catching a break. The gusts eased over the weekend and Sunday delivered wall-to-wall sunshine—rewarding skiers and riders with excellent, soft carved turns across the hill.
As we just passed the 50-day mark of the season, we’re officially into mid-season form, and conditions are some of the best we’ve seen in years. I think this winter will be remembered for its length and consistency, something we should NEVER take for granted in the east. Average snow depths have reached the ideal one-metre mark, thanks to a solid mix of snowmaking and an impressive 212 cm of natural snowfall so far this winter.
The next chance for fresh snow arrives Friday. While totals look modest—4–8 cm—it should be just enough to freshen surfaces ahead of the weekend.
Georgian Bay Freezes Over
If you’re enjoying the recent run of bright, sunny ski days, there’s a reason: Georgian Bay has frozen over.
The recent Arctic blast locked the bay in ice, effectively shutting down lake-effect snow for the season. With no open water to add moisture, winds crossing the bay now feel drier, skies tend to be clearer, and overcast days become less frequent. YAY!!!
The trade-off? Fewer surprise powder days. As always in weather, you gain something—and give something up.
Day-to-Day on the Slopes
Tuesday: Flurries ending then cloudy skies. High near –6°C with a wind chill of -13.
Wednesday: Partly sunny with seasonal temperatures. High near –6°C. West winds at 15–30 km/h.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy with light winds and seasonal temperatures. High near –5°C.
Friday: Periods of light snow and blowing snow. 4–8 cm expected. Windy, with gusts over 50 km/h. A mild start to the day, turning much colder by evening.
Saturday & Sunday: Sunshine returns, but so does the cold. Breezy on Saturday, lighter winds Sunday. Highs both days remain in the double digits below zero, with wind chills dipping below –20°C. By now, we know the drill—dress for it, and it’s still a great weekend to ski, ride, skate or tube.
