The North Face Challenge 1

Welcome to week one of the Staying Fit at Home with The North Face. To kick the challenge off we want to see you complete THREE at home exercises over the course of the week. This week you have the chance to win a Hyper Layer tee  and Hat, which I wore for my work outs and absolutely fell in love with. Not to worry, if you do win – it won’t be an actual Mel-used jersey – it will be shipped to you in your proper size and gender 😊

How to win? You will need to manually add your workouts to your Strava, upload a photo of your super sweaty self, and tag us in one sweaty social media post @bluemtnresort, @TheNorthFace and #TNFBlueCollective

What qualifies as an at home work out? Anything that is 10 minutes or more – that gets your heart rate elevated and incorporates body weight (or weighted) movements.  For those of you who need some inspiration, here are some of my favourites!

Melissa’s Work out #1:

My first go to at home work out is a Crossfit favourite called Annie. Now before you start to panic and think of throwing around massive weights – all you need is a skipping rope.  The actual mechanics of this is double under skipping and sit ups. If I have already confused you – check out the video demo.

Double Unders Full Speed
Double Unders Slow Motion

On a good day I can do Annie in around 7-8 minutes, but it has been a while so it will likely take about 9-10 minutes. It is a simple repetition of 50-40-30-20-10. So you’ll skip 50 double unders (or 100 regular skips) and then 50 sit ups, followed by 40 doubles (80 singles) and 40 sit ups. You repeat this process until finish the descending scale.

Sit Ups (I am using an ab mat for support)

Helpful tips for Annie: If you are like me and have really long hair – do not high pony it. My bouncing pony had snagged the rope before and it sucks. Because you’re jumping around so much most sunglasses will fall off, so to kill two birds with one stone – a baseball hat is KEY! My hat of choice is the Active Trail Ball Cap. The entire hat is stretchy, so it doesn’t have those weird pressure marks thicker canvas fabric have on your head, and it’s deep enough to pull down and keep your face shaded. I have the black one so it shows less dirt, and it is so easy to wash – just throw it in the washer with your clothes. One thing you will learn over the next 5 weeks is that I might be one of the sweatiest humans on the planet – so its got a FlashDry (which is The North Face’s trademarked super absorbent magic fabric) sweat band built into it. If I haven’t said it enough FLASH DRY IS LIFE CHANGING! It’s all I wear, and I hope it will be all you wear.

I am wearing the Essential Tee – which is Flash Dry UPF 30, Bounce Be Gone Bra (more to come on this ladies) and Motivational High Waisted Crop.

Melissa’s Work out #2:

Death by—– ANYTHING. You will just need a timer for this. Lucky for everyone there is a timer in your smartphone.  This one is simple. You have 1 minute to do 1 rep of something, then on minute 2, you do 2 reps, minute 3, you do 3 and keep going until you can’t make the number of reps into a minute.

You can pick any movement you want. Squats, push ups, pull ups, sit ups – but I chose the spicy spicy Burpee to really get the most bang for my buck in this work out. Now what is a burpee? Once again watch the video demo. You can see the first 7 rounds of Death By Burpees

Death by Burpees

This one took me 17 minutes to complete, which works out to 153 burpees. Few things to note. Once again a baseball hat is a good idea because it’s a big movement and the sunglasses tend to go flying. Use a yoga mat for this one especially if you are going to do Death by Burpees. I always end up wearing pants, or cropped pants for this because anything after 6 burpees means I start to hit my knees on the ground. So without that you can get scraped knees or even bruised if you don’t have a mat.

I wore the Bounce Be Gone Bra  and Motivational High Waisted Crop. If I could scream how much I love the Bounce Be Gone Bra from the top of Blue Mountain – I would. It is so lightweight and comfortable – keeps the girls in place without being suffocating, and the entire back is mesh so you can breath. 10/10 the single BEST sports bra I have ever purchased!

Melissa’s Work out #3 –
Buns and Guns – 50-40-30-20-10 Push Ups, 100-80-60-40-20 Squats.  This one is hard and sneaks up on you – and you’ll feel it in the next 48 hours should you choose to do this. I break it up so that is 50 push ups, 100 squats, 40 push ups, 80 squats and so on. It at least gives the muscle group a small rest, but trust and believe you will feel that burn! I didn’t want to get burnt in the sun so I did this under a nice shady tree – but the ground was uneven so I don’t recommend the grassy backyards. This is something you should do on a deck, driveway etc.

Side and Front Views of Squats

I am wearing the Essential Tank, it legitimately never shows sweat, and yes it is some kind of Harry Potter Magic, Bounce Be Gone Bra and Motivational High Waisted Crop.
