What’s So Great About Golf?

Of the many signs of spring popping up around Blue Mountain, perhaps none are more anticipated than Monterra Golf’s Opening Day.

Let’s face it – golfers are fanatical about their sport! They’re out playing in the wee hours of the morning or past dusk and into twilight. They play through rain, wind and soaring summer temperatures. They adjust and analyze their game after every shot all in an effort to shave off even one stroke. And, they always, always, have a story about the hole-in-one that almost was. If you play golf, you likely have your own reasons for loving (and, if we’re being honest, also loathing) the sport that many refer to as a metaphor for life. As Monterra gets ready to open their doors for the season, here are just a few things to love about the game of golf as told through memorable quotes from some the golf’s biggest fans.

Isn’t it fun to go out on the course and lie in the sun? – Bob Hope

One of the best things about a game of golf is the chance to spend a few, relatively uninterrupted, hours enjoying the great outdoors. Golf courses are scenic by design. Between the rolling hills, water traps and treed surroundings, there’s nothing better than getting out and hitting a few balls on a warm day. The next time you’re teeing off at Monterra, take a moment to appreciate the views. From gorgeous Georgian Bay, to the greens of Blue Mountain in summer, the landscape is sure to inspire.

I’m convinced the reason most people play golf is to wear clothes they would not otherwise be caught dead in. – Roger Simon

Mismatched plaids aside, there are a great number of reasons to love golf gear. There are so many options: a multitude of clubs and club covers, golf balls in every colour imaginable and a number of different tees to go with them, shoes with interchangeable spikes, polo shirts and golf skirts, rain gear, head covers, custom grips and more! Suffice to say; sometimes the sartorial sights on the course can rival even the best scenery off of it!

If you think it’s hard to meet new people, pick up the wrong ball. – Blake Lochrie

Walking into a busy pro-shop as a single golfer can result in some of the most delightfully unexpected experiences found over 18 holes. Once you’re paired up, you’ll meet people of every age and level of ability. From seasoned pros to first time players, a group made up of relative strangers offers you the chance to learn something new from every participant.

Everybody can see that my swing is homegrown. That means everybody has a chance to do it. – Bubba Watson

Anyone can play golf. Golf does not discriminate based on age, body type, athleticism or other. Golf is the perfect blend of social activity and exercise, as well as being a great equalizer in which everyone experiences the benefits of a good game and the hardships of a bad one. The simple fact is men, women and children can all play together and all at the same course. There are not many other sports that encourage that same level of participation.

Go play golf. Go to the golf course. Hit the ball. Find the ball. Repeat until the ball is in the hole. Have fun. The end. – Chuck Hogan

Of course, the only way to find out what you love about golf is to get out there and play. Take Chuck Hogan’s advice this summer – get out on the course, hit the ball, and discover what all the fuss is about. It won’t take long before you’ll have your own list of reasons to love the game as well.
