January 22, 2026<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 We\u2019ve officially slid into what is shaping up to be a\u00a0true winter pattern<\/em>, with temperatures dipping well below seasonal averages and a core cold snap settling in for the weekend. While these frigid conditions present some challenges for our operations teams, they also bring some advantages that help shape the winter experience here at Blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With forecasts calling for temperatures colder than\u00a0-20\u00b0C<\/strong>, we\u2019re carefully balancing snowmaking, mountain operations, and guest comfort as we move deeper into this extended cold stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running Snowmaking in Extreme Cold<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cold air is fantastic for snow quality \u2014 snow made in these temperatures is\u00a0dry, sets up quickly,<\/em>\u00a0and creates firm, resilient surfaces that\u00a0hold up exceptionally well<\/em>\u00a0under skier and rider traffic. When groomed thoughtfully, the snow sets into what many folks call\u00a0\u201chero snow\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 firm enough to carve reliably, but soft enough underfoot to feel great on every turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, sub\u201320\u00b0C cold doesn\u2019t come without its operational hurdles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • When we shut snow guns down,\u00a0moisture left in the pipes can freeze<\/strong>, meaning our team must\u00a0thaw pipes and guns by hand<\/em>\u00a0to ensure reliable startups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • At startup, even once snowmaking resumes, it\u2019s not unusual for\u00a0no snow to come out right away<\/em>. Our crew manually thaws frozen sections with torches to get everything flowing again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ice beards<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 those layers of freeze-built ice on snow guns \u2014 are more prone to forming in this deep chill and need to be\u00a0manually tapped off<\/em>\u00a0regularly to keep the guns operating optimally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • On lines where we push multiple guns from one floodline, it\u2019s possible for\u00a0ice build-ups to block nozzles<\/strong>, requiring attentive clearing by the team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    We\u2019re mindful too of our people in the elements: even with cold-weather gear,\u00a0our crews can only be outside safely for limited periods<\/strong>\u00a0at these temperatures, so we\u2019re rotating teams and adjusting work routines to keep everyone safe and productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You\u2019ll notice that the guns\u00a0are running<\/em>, but not to the maximum number we might during more moderate cold windows. This is intentional: it lets us\u00a0balance snow production with a comfortable guest experience<\/strong>\u00a0around the hill. In extremely cold conditions, blowing too many guns \u2014 or blowing them too close to guest areas \u2014 can impact comfort and visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
