From ‘Spring Skiing’ back to ‘Mid Winter’

If you were on the slopes late last week, it felt more like late March Break than mid-January, thanks to record warmth and sunshine. Conditions were soft but coverage was excellent across the mountain. Yes, you can actually get a sunburn in January! The weather pattern has flipped again and that means almost daily chances of snow. The systems moving through will be ‘Alberta Clippers’ with limited moisture but don’t be surprised if lake effect helps squeeze out a few extra centimetres. The temperature remains mild through midweek followed by a significant cool down.

Nickel and dime snow will add up over time

Every centimetre that falls is welcome news as crews work to mix the fresh stuff in with the machine groomed granular and variable surfaces leftover from the thaw. This will continue to improve the overall skier and rider experience as the week progresses. I don’t see any big powder days in this outlook but don’t underestimate the power of daily snowfall. The forecast for the week is in the 10 to 20 centimetre range which should bring the seasonal total close to 150 centimetres.

Excellent snowmaking conditions return

Snowmaking operations have been on pause recently, thanks to the January thaw. It all changes Wednesday night as cold air floods in. The upcoming  weather pattern is ideal to make artificial snow and there’s no sign of another temperature spike for at least the next 10+ days. Strategic snowmaking and grooming across the mountain will not only freshen up surfaces but also bring the average snow depth closer to a metre. Last year, the mountain didn’t reach that mark until the end of January.

Day to Day on the Slopes

Through Wednesday AM: Windy and mild with wet snow or rain showers. The temperature hovers just above freezing.

Wednesday PM to Thursday: Periods of light snow and blowing snow (5-10cm). Turning much colder with the chilliest air of the week settling in. Thursday’s high is only -11C with a windchill near -20. Bundle up as you hit the slopes and you’ll be rewarded with some fresh snow!

The Weekend: Friday looks good with seasonal temperatures and scattered flurries. It will be milder but still breezy across the mountain. Another clipper moves in Saturday bringing additional snow aided by lake effect.

This cycle is on rinse and repeat through next week …

Have fun on the slopes!
